Andriani publishes its second Sustainability Report, renamed the Sustainable Development Report to show
that each activity is related to the Sustainable Development Goals collected in the 17 Goals of the United
Nations 2030 Agenda.
Andriani's entrepreneurial strategy focuses on innovation, but also on sustainability and the circular economy. In fact, by adhering to the United Nations Global Compact and integrating its principles into all business operations, the company has taken up the challenge to address the most critical aspects of globalisation. In this way, Andriani S.p.A. creates, distributes, and accumulates value by relating all its activities, projects, and initiatives to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This challenge is pursued daily and reported in its second Sustainability Report, just published and this year called the Sustainable Development Report as a more effective demonstration of the company's tangible contribution to the 17 Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.
In the 2019 Sustainability Report, consistent with the 2018 Sustainability Report, there are numerous references to the SDGs in order to provide non-financial information on governance, human rights, and personal, social, and environmental issues, and to provide details on all the elements that distinguish the company's strategy towards the environment and people. ANDRIANI SPA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: TRANSFORMATION INTO A BENEFIT CORPORATION
On November 6, the extraordinary Shareholders Meeting formalised the company's transformation into a Benefit Corporation, with the goal being to allocate new liquidity in favour of future innovative and sustainable projects. This choice represents a clear stance for the company and a profound evolution of its approach to business.
In fact, being a Benefit Corporation means voluntarily pursuing not only profit but also one or more purposes of common benefit when carrying out the business activities. In concrete terms, while traditional companies exist with the sole purpose of distributing dividends to shareholders, a benefit corporation includes not only profit goals in its corporate purpose, but also those that have a positive impact on society and the biosphere. Introduced in Italy in 2016, this legal status has been adopted by over 500 Italian companies, which have recognised it as an excellent model to be able to face the challenges of the new millennium.
The Company has also already started the procedure to obtain B-Corp certification, awarded by B Lab Europe, an international non-profit certifying body operating as a supervisory body. B Corps are companies that are part of a global movement to spread a more evolved business paradigm and stand out in the market for their ability to innovate while maximising their positive impact on employees, the communities in which they operate, the environment, and all stakeholders. This legal form protects the company's mission, even with the entry of new investors, leadership changes, and generational changes.
Present in 150 sectors and over 70 countries, with an Italian community that includes about 100 certified companies, the B Corp movement seeks to redefine business by adapting it to our times and making it concrete and replicable. Michele Andriani, President and CEO of Andriani S.p.A. had this to say about this important new direction: "Becoming a Benefit Corporation was a spontaneous choice for us that represents another step towards the highest standards and the transparency that is part of our DNA and that we consider indispensable in a knowledgeable and virtuous business path."
ANDRIANI SPA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE PATH TOWARDS CARBON NEUTRALITY
In reference to SDGs no. 7 and 13 of the UN 2030 Agenda, the company has adopted a ZeroCO2 policy aimed at energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. As early as 2014, Andriani S.p.A. was sourcing electricity from renewable sources, certified as "Dolomiti Energia 100% clean energy", a choice that, in 2019 alone, allowed it to prevent the emission of 4,3391 tonnes of CO2. But, by the end of the year, the company also aims to self-produce energy equal to the amount consumed by the plant and to autonomously produce the heat necessary for the pasta-making process by adding the existing trigeneration plant to a biomass boiler fed with waste bran from the milling process. Andriani has also set itself a new and challenging goal: to reach Carbon Neutrality by 2025, i.e. zero carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. This path is the result of a mix of gradual direct and indirect interventions, which also includes complex investments in the circular economy. On this last topic, in concrete terms, the installation of a trigeneration plant from gas will be followed by the construction of photovoltaic systems. Biogas will be produced from the anaerobic fermentation process of biomass, also coming from surrounding agro-food supply chains. The mixture, after an upgrading process, will become biomethane. Then the substances resulting from this transformation will be reused. The digestate will be used as fertiliser for the Legume Supply Chain of which Andriani is the leader; the biomethane, in liquid form, will be used as fuel for the transport of goods; and the CO2 that is recovered will be used for the production of Spirulina algae. For algae cultivation, the wastewater from washing the dies and some production waste will also be used, in addition to CO2, as nutrients. In collaboration with Italian Universities and Research Centres, Andriani has also carried out tests and analyses to evaluate the use of algae in the food sector, in pasta products and especially in the Pet Food sector, thus opening up new market segments.
ANDRIANI SPA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE NEW SMART BUILDING
Creating a work environment focused on sustainability and the well-being of the staff by structuring spaces to promote a smart way of working according to principles of discretion, transparency, and well-being is the basis on which Andriani S.p.A. built the Smart Building at its headquarters in Gravina in Puglia. It is a new office building, demonstrating the company's innovative thinking once again, especially in light of the current situation that has forced many companies to reorganise in favour of flexible working, investing, in less challenging times, on the concept of flexibility and liquidity applied to work.
The Puglia company has therefore chosen to introduce the Employee Value Proposition "Happiness at work, positive thinking" into its People Strategy, focusing on improving employee motivation and engagement through the enhancement of positive elements that can generate good mood and happiness, which directly impact performance and productivity standards. The design phase for the Smart Building began in November 2018 and focused on Activity Based Working principles. Depending on their objectives, people can choose whether to work at a desk, in collaborative spaces, or outside the office. The ad hoc app allows them to easily book desks, collaborative islands, or meeting rooms.
The flexible working initiative was accompanied by ad hoc training courses to strengthen both broad-based and technical skills. The initiative includes the constant participation of staff in training and coaching to create a mindset change focused on smart working, using innovative methods. In the Welfare field, the company has also set up the Andriani Wellness project, dedicated to the psychological and physical well- being of its employees, which includes muscle wakening, stretching, cardio-fitness, and transcendental meditation courses by professionals held in the gym attached to the building. And, paying particular attention to the theme of healthy eating, the employees' canteen has personalised food paths, created by a chef and a nutritionist.
Also from an environmental point of view, the building, for which about 4 million Euros has been allocated for its construction, is an example of sustainable design, thanks to lighting and heating automation solutions that guarantee practicality, comfort, and energy efficiency. In fact, the Smart Building has zero emissions, according to the energy exchange principle. The primary source of thermal energy is underground and, thanks to the geothermal system, 10,533 kg of CO2 are saved per year. Water efficiency is also guaranteed. The rainwater recovery tanks allow the collection and subsequent mechanical purification treatment for reuse inside the sanitary drains and irrigating the facility's green areas. With the introduction of flexible working, Andriani saw a significant increase in employee productivity. The level of satisfaction was extremely high, particularly regarding an improvement in the work-life balance, so much so that the company received Great Place To Work® Italia certification. This prestigious award embodies the meaning of the concrete cultural transformation for which Andriani S.p.A. is a spokesman and a virtuous example.
ANDRIANI SPA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: SUPPLY CHAIN PROJECTS IN ITALY AND ETHIOPIA
To safeguard the soil and the environment, ensuring food safety and quality and directly contributing to the development of biodiversity by interpreting the 15 SDGs of the UN 2030 Agenda, Andriani S.p.A. launched a controlled supply chain for Legumes in 2017 that has arrived at 5,000 hectares of land located between Puglia and Basilicata.
The Supply Chain, dedicated to the cultivation of peas; red, green, and black lentils; chickpeas; and experimental fields of wild peas, allows Italian member farms to optimise the rules of cultivation, both in integrated and organic production and to align themselves to sustainable criteria through tools and computer services for traceability and support about cultivation techniques, through which all production processes can be monitored in view of precision farming.
On the strength of this experience and with the intent to promote virtuous practices for sustainable agriculture outside of Italy as well, Andriani S.p.A. has launched a new sustainable supply chain project in Ethiopia for the cultivation of Teff. Teff is an ancient grain that is the basis of the indigenous diet. Today it is cultivated by local farming communities organised in simple cooperatives using traditional methods that have been handed down over millennia but that, unfortunately, do not promote the proper yield in terms of quantity or economic return for those farmers.
Andriani's challenging initiative aims to increase productivity by intervening in the agricultural techniques while respecting the complex balance between innovation and tradition, with the introduction of some tools for an initial simple mechanisation of the work and with the optimisation of subsequent logistical and analytical steps that affect the quality of the finished product.
